Whether it’s about your job or life itself, we all need motivation to keep us going until we realize what our goals are. Sometimes however, circumstances tend to not go our way or the way we expect them to.
Obstacles can easily take the motivation away from us making us lose interest and focus on what we were really after in the first place.
There are ways to increase one’s motivation and though getting people to push us like coaches and mentors do, the best kind of motivation is still the one that comes from the individual himself.
How do you boost your motivation when you’re starting to lose it?
Below are some of the best practices you can start implementing in your daily regimen.
Living a sedentary life can easily get you out of focus. Lying on the couch or sitting in your office chair all day can make you feel weak and lethargic. This lack of energy can lead to boredom and eventually, lack of motivation.
Exercise is great way to keep the blood flowing and get back your energy. By flexing and stretching those muscles, you are also helping your body increase your brain function. This will help you get your focus back and keep your “eyes on the prize” so to speak.
2. Have Clarity
Sometimes what keeps us from being motivated is the fact that we have too much on our plates and that we don’t really know what we want.
Being clear with what you really want is a great place to start. Once you’ve established what it is that you need motivation for, you don’t have to look for motivation somewhere else anymore for it will come naturally when you really want something so bad.
3. Live a Life of Gratitude
We all have the tendency to focus on the negative aspects of our lives like the problems we face or the setbacks we’ve gone through. What we fail to realize is that there are people around us who’s had it worse.
Living a life of gratitude is simply focusing on everything that’s going right. You may have failed in getting that promotion that you were expecting all year long but you still have a job unlike other people. You still get to eat anything you want and still have a house to go home to.
The fact that you woke up this morning is reason enough to be thankful. We can’t waste our time wallowing in defeat when there’s so much to be thankful for don’t you think?
4. Know Your "WHY"
One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated is by knowing your why. Why are you doing what you’re doing today? What is the purpose of all the sacrifices you’re making?
If you know your why and you stick to it, you’ll always keep yourself motivated and in high spirits because you understand what your goals are.
If you feel like you’re starting to drift away and starting to lose your motivation, go back to your why. That should bring you back right on target.
5. Believe in Yourself and Your Ability
No conversation about motivation will ever be complete without the word confidence in it and for a good reason. Loss of motivation begins as soon as you start losing confidence on yourself and your abilities.
Remember what we said about motivation starting from within ourselves? This is the best time to get that done because we can’t expect people to believe in us if we ourselves don’t.
Be your biggest fan. Be your loudest cheerleader because the biggest obstacle standing between you and success is the same person standing in front of the mirror.
6. Imagine What Success Looks Like
We all have dreams and aspirations. Someday we’d love to have our own car, our own home, a thriving business, or a complete and happy family.
We all know it’s possible and we all know we’ll get there soon but if you want to inspire yourself even more and make the journey a lot shorter, the best way to do it is to picture what it’s like when you’re there already.
Doing this will help you want it more. You’ll strive harder knowing what’s waiting on the other side of the curtain.
7. Celebrate the Small Wins
We all know that there’s no shortcut to success and that it doesn’t happen overnight, but if you’re running out of patience and motivation as you go along, the best way to keep yourself motivated is to count the small wins and celebrate them.
Small victories will help you maintain your confidence knowing that even if the bigger goal is still far away, you are making headway with the smaller ones.
8. Create Short-Term Goals
Similar to celebrating small wins, setting short-term goals is also a good way of boosting your motivation. Long-term goals may be months or even years away but if you can prove to yourself that you are capable of meeting short-term ones, you’ll be confident enough to get to the long-term ones sooner than later.
If you’re running out of patience and you’re losing focus because it takes too long to reach those long-term goals, set short-term ones and accomplish them one by one.
Meditation is a powerful tool in improving one’s motivation. We’ve all established that finding clarity is one of the keys to boosting motivation. If you can identify what it is you really want, you should be on track to get it.
One of the best ways to get clarity is by meditating. By emptying your mind and finding your center, you’ll be able to see everything clearly.
If your life is on a disarray and there’s too much noise around you, meditate. Not only will it help you find focus, it will also help you relax and calm down.
10. Go on Vacation
Our busy schedules and the problems we face can stress us out so bad that we just feel demotivated and have low morale. When troubles keep piling up, we tend to lose our drive in chasing our goals.
When this happens, sometimes the best remedy is to simply get away from it all so you can keep your mind off the issues and recharge your batteries.
Go on a vacation somewhere remote, pamper yourself so you can lessen the stress and find time for yourself. You’ll find yourself more motivated and driven once you’ve cleared the cobwebs.
11. Imagine Your Success
There is noting stronger then our own minds. Top athletes admit they imagine themselves winning the race/game/etc. They see themselves jumping from joy in the finish line. That way of thinking become a reality. This is what you need to do with your own goals.
